Valentina Cruz knew this because she’d been staring at the screen for three minutes, watching it happen in slow motion like watching a mug fall from a counter, fully aware catching it was no longer an option.

She called the owner, Seu Renato, at 8 p.m. He was at dinner but she called anyway.
“Tell me,” he said, before she’d finished her second sentence. She did. All of it. Including Fábio’s family situation, not as an excuse, but because the full truth includes the full human being.
There was a long silence.
“What do you recommend?” Renato asked.
This was the question she’d been dreading and the reason she’d called because she already knew her answer and didn’t love it. She recommended they separate from Fábio clearly and fairly, with a severance package reflecting his years of genuine contribution, audit the last eighteen months, refund affected guests, and make a quiet institutional statement to the team about financial ethics.

Renato exhaled. “That’s expensive.”
“Yes,” she said. “Cheaper than what we lose if it surfaces another way.”
She didn’t sleep well and cried a little in her car before driving home, which she would deny if asked.
But when she stood before her team the following Monday morning – a room full of people from seven different backgrounds, three generations, more complicated lives than she could count – she spoke plainly, without performance. She told them what had happened and what the hotel had done about it.
The room was very quiet.
